POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Assistant to the Director is responsible for providing highly responsible, complex, and administrative duties in support of a department head. An employee in this class is responsible for managing, planning, developing, analyzing, evaluating, advising on, and improving various management control systems, programs and policies, work methods and procedures. This is an advanced professional position handling complex assignment and works with a high level of sensitive and confidential matters. Incumbent must exercise diplomacy when interacting with the public and City officials; independent judgment and decision-making in researching and problem solving, and in the analysis of policies. Supervision is received from the Department Director who reviews work through conferences, observation, reports submitted, and results obtained.

This is a classified position covered by the Personnel Rules and is in Management Category II for benefits purposes.

JOB REQUIREMENTS, PREFERENCES & WORK ENVIRONMENT

Bachelor's Degree in business or a related field. Five (5) to seven (7) years of increasingly responsible high level administrative/ management experience in one or more of the following: the analysis, planning and development of programs, policies, operations, methods and/or procedures; the evaluation of program and operation effectiveness; the development of revised administrative practices in order to meet program, policy, organizational or legislative change, to expedite work, to effect economies of time, money, personnel and equipment, or to otherwise assist in the solution of administrative and management problems. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience or education. As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The position is generally sedentary. Employees sit most of the time, but may walk or stand for brief periods of time.
