What You'll Be Doing

Are you an energetic multitasker with a passion for animal care? The Wake County Animal Center Animal Services Supervisor position may be for you!

This working supervisor position leads daily operations at the Wake County Animal Center, overseeing animal welfare attendant and technician staff, while ensuring the compassionate intake, care, and treatment of all animals. You will be combining leadership with hands-on animal care, including administering medications, performing intake exams, and supporting humane euthanasia practices. You'll manage team workflows, hiring, onboarding, and staff development while ensuring top-quality animal husbandry, customer service, and population management. Working closely with the Animal Welfare Manager, you’ll help guide animals through optimal pathways toward live release-all while making a meaningful impact on the lives of thousands of animals and community members each year.

About Our Team

The Wake County Animal Center is an open-admission animal shelter operated by Wake County Government and on average takes in between 11,000 to 12,000 animals each year. We receive all stray, abandoned and surrendered pets in Wake County. The Center works in partnership with fosters, volunteers and local rescues, to treat and rehome thousands of homeless animals every year.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

• High school diploma or GED
• Two years of experience in animal care or control
• Certified Euthanasia Technician (CET) - must pass test/exam within 6 months of employment
• Certified Rabies Vaccinator (CRV) - must pass test/exam within 6 months of employment

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

• Two years of related animal care experience; previous animal shelter experience
• One year of supervisory experience
• CET - Certified Euthanasia Technician
• CRV - Certified Euthanasia Technician
• Associates degree or higher in animal husbandry, veterinary care, or similar program

How Will We Know You're 'The One'?

• Understands basic management approaches such as work scheduling, prioritizing tasks for teams, coaching and process execution
• Excellent communication skills to handle frequent citizen contact and escalated customer service requests. Ability to handle irate or distressed patrons and animals in a calming manner
• Ability to exercise solid judgment, decision making around care, protection, finding quality homes, aid in reducing pet population and achieving live outcomes
• Advanced knowledge of job area, animal care, animal welfare, safe and humane animal handling, etc, typically obtained through advanced experience
• Ability to establish high-quality standards for work, measure results, and hold self and others accountable for making progress toward desired outcomes

Work Schedule: Sun-Sat 8AM-7PM, varying days/hours

Hiring Range: 25.79 - 30.08

Market Range: 25.79 - 34.37
