Position DescriptionUnder supervision and training from a Cytogenetic Technologist, the incumbent prepares, examines, and analyzes chromosomes found in biological specimens such as amniotic fluids, bone marrow, and blood, to aid in diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases. May perform advanced technical duties in the diagnostic study of cells for the purpose of recognition and classification under supervision and training of a Cytogenetic Technologist. At the successful completion of the training program, the incumbent will be encouraged to take the ASCP exam. During the two-year period, trainees work on a lab rotation learning each aspect of the genetic testing.
Major/Essential Functions- Receives, organizes and processes clinical specimens accurately. Identifies worksheet, computer, and specimen problem sand demonstrates ability to either resolve or elevate to technologists/supervisor appropriately.
- Read and understand all SOP's related to the department and adhere to all department rules and protocols.
- Assists with tissue culture, slide-making, harvesting, culture set-up, reagent preparation, equipment maintenance and karyotyping procedures.
- Trainees also develop their microscopic analytical skills through multiple phases of microscope training, both brightfield and fluorescence microscopy.
- Prepares testing equipment, assists with cleaning or performing equipment preventative maintenance as required.
- Attends department meetings and company in-service trainings to improve knowledge on testing and systems.
- May be delegated accessioning tasks
- Assists with monitoring inventory and receives supplies used by laboratory staff to maintain sufficient inventory
- May be assigned to oversee specific processes within the department, participate in workloads and prioritize cases.
- Attend lectures, perform homework and reading assignments, maintain grades and readings for one year
- Pass ASCP CG Exam
- Achieves desired level of competency and accuracy for the main department processes within 6months
- Other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Supervisor
- Work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety Manual
Required QualificationsBS or BA degree in a life science field is required. One to three years' experience equivalent to a Laboratory Technician may also be considered.
