This position performs administrative, supervisory, and professional work of considerable difficulty related to the implementation and management of a wide variety of programs at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center for the adult and juvenile inmate population.

Duties and Responsibilities

Programs include, but are not limited to, education/vocational training, life skills, drug treatment/substance abuse groups and classes, and specialized re-entry classes and assistance while maintaining compliance with related grants and contracts. The principal function of an employee in this class is to manage programs comprised of diverse activities. The programs are specialized, requiring immediate action/decisions on changing situations. The work is performed under the direction of an assigned supervisor, but extensive leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. Supervision is exercised over the work of the Inmate Education Coordinator, Inmate Programs Coordinator, and the Chaplain/Religious Services Coordinator. The nature of the work performed may require that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, community representatives, program clients, school officials, referral agencies, and other community resources. The principal duties of this class are performed in an office or on site at various locations throughout the County.

Minimum Qualifications

Position requires U.S. citizenship, a bachelor's degree (from an accredited school) in social work, criminal justice, psychology, counseling, or a related field with a minimum of four to ten years of experience in a related field and in program management or development; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a South Carolina one upon acceptance of the position. Candidates must be able to demonstrate proficiency in PC applications using Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and education management systems. Position requires NCIC certification (40-hour) or the ability to gain certification within six (6) months of assignment. Must successfully complete the NCIC’s Inmate Behavior Management course within one year of employment.
