Position Summary In collaboration with and under the direction of the Director of Project Rebound, the Assistant Director provides support to Project Rebound. This role is focused on innovative efforts to provide an integrated approach to developing, implementing, and evaluating programs aimed at improving outreach and yield, academic success, leadership and professional development, inclusion, retention, and overall student experience for formerly incarcerated students. The Assistant Director supports student assistants, manages programs, and events at the center, and oversees certain aspects of the operations.
Responsibilities: - Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and practices to enhance outreach, academic success, leadership, and professional development for formerly incarcerated students.
- Manage and support student assistants, programs, and events at the center.
- Oversee certain aspects of center operations.
- Collaborate with the Director of Project Rebound, Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity, Subdivision of Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging, Division of Academic Affairs, students, staff, and campus/community partners to implement training, programs, and services.
- Serve as a resource for sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues related to formerly incarcerated students.
- Mentor and advise students, and work with interns and student assistants to design and deliver programs promoting leadership development, equity, multicultural education, and social equality.
- Address the intersectionality of identities such as gender, race, religion, ethnicity, class, and ability.
- Promote Project Rebound and raise awareness of student success and excellence through events, programs, written materials, and representation on campus-wide committees.

- Position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
- Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice.
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
Possession of this knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
Key Qualifications - Considerable knowledge of student and leadership development theory, identity development models, group and individual behavior principles, and implications for practice.
- Documented experience developing and coordinating programs and events. Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross-cultural needs of formerly incarcerated students.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with key senior management, faculty, and administrators regarding issues that impact formerly incarcerated students.
- Experience working with formerly incarcerated individuals, including personally being incarcerated.
- Experience with advocacy work related to criminal justice reform and educational access.
- Knowledge of policies and regulations affecting incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals.
- A master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Educational Leadership, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field is preferred.
Compensation and Benefits Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,276 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,276 - $7,517 per month.
