MECHANIC SERVICES INTERNDepartment: Environmental ServicesPay Grade: Temporary Pay TableFLSA Status: Non-ExemptPersonnel Status: Temporary Part-Time JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible for assisting Mechanics in the diagnosis and repair of mechanical problems on a variety of vehicles and equipment. This position reports to the Fleet Services Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - Assists mechanics in the daily work of repairing and maintaining vehicles and equipment.
- Clean vehicles and equipment to prepare them for repair.
- Transport vehicles to various locations, as needed.
- Pick-up parts from various vendors as required.
- Clean and maintain shop area.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Current enrollment in an undergraduate technology program with an accredited college or university studying automotive technology or a closely related field.
Special Qualifications: - Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Knowledge of preventive maintenance techniques as related to division equipment and vehicles.
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and procedures used in the diagnosis and repair of equipment and vehicles.
- Knowledge of basic mechanical theory.
- Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
- Skill in the diagnosis of mechanical problems for a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in welding and parts fabrication.
- Skill in the maintenance of repair of department equipment.
- Skill in performing preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
- Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools.
- Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
- Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.
- Ability to get along with others and work effectively with the public and co-workers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is very heavy work, which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or more than 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed in a garage environment. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold, hot, or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
This position is Temporary and not eligible for benefits.
