The City of Olathe’s Utility Maintenance group is currently accepting applications for a Utility Maintenance Worker. Our Utility Maintenance team plays a crucial role in keeping Olathe's water flowing smoothly! Join us and be part of the dynamic group responsible for maintaining and enhancing the water distribution and collection systems that are vital to our community's daily life.

As a Utility Maintenance Worker, you’ll work in a team setting performing a variety of duties such as hand excavation, heavy lifting, hauling materials, operating tools and equipment, and repairing and performing maintenance on water systems. Our crews report to a central work location every day and ride together to the job site.

This position allows you the opportunity to obtain a Class A CDL by participating in the City of Olathe's CDL training program. It's up to you to pass the testing. We'll set you up for success with our in-house training program.

Come join our team as a Utility Maintenance Worker I, II, or III:

Utility Maintenance Worker I: This is an entry level position. No experience is required. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. Pay Range: $19.75/hour to $24.10/hour, depending on experience.

Utility Maintenance Worker II: One year of construction or maintenance experience is required. Water and/or wastewater experience is preferred. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education. A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. Pay Range: $21.75/hour to $$26.51/hour depending on experience.

Utility Maintenance Worker III: Three years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of public utilities, water, or wastewater facilities and equipment is required. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education. A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. A Class I ABC certification in Water or Wastewater is required. Pay Range: $23.75/hour to $29.11/hour depending on experience.

Work schedule: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Will participate in an on-call rotation.

The Utility Maintenance Worker I performs entry-level maintenance work in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's water distribution and wastewater collection system. They complete a variety of more routine tasks and duties from providing supplies to other workers to participating in the repair and preventive maintenance of water-distribution systems requiring potentially dangerous and hazardous conditions under the direct supervision of others. This is the first level in a three-level career progression of Utilities Maintenance Worker I, II, and III.

Qualifications

Experience: No experience is required.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required along with the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. A class Acommercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsement is required within six months of employment.

Environmental or Physical Demands: Utility Maintenance Workers perform their job duties outside in all types of weather and are exposed to conditions including sun, wind, rain, snow, ice, pollen, dust, fumes, sanitary waste, and other allergens or airborne particles. They will work in confined spaces and trenches. They are exposed to noise from traffic and equipment. They must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of one’s arms and legs moving one’s whole body to lift, balance, walk, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl while handling or carrying materials. They will operate a variety of hand and power tools, powered equipment, and commercial vehicles. They may drive or ride from site-to-site multiple times throughout the workday. Must be able to work safely in distracting situations including high volume traffic areas.
