Description
DescriptionVacancy is in the Early Learning Centers of the Department of Families, Children, and Youth. Under supervision, performs a wide range of supportive functions in the operation of an Early Learning Center for children of pre-school age, including some instructional assignments of limited scope and complexity. Assists teachers by manipulating instructional or play devices, and by assembling and setting up materials to be used in the activities of the day; Assists in the conduct of controlled and free play activities for children; Assist teacher on field trips outside the Early Learning Center and by carrying on separate activities for several children apart from main group activities; Reports to the teacher any unusual behavior or other problems observed in children. Supervises rest and quiet periods; Attends staff, parent-teacher meetings, and lectures given of the in-service training program. Assist children in removing and putting on outdoor clothing, tying shoes, and getting ready for lunch and nap periods. Assists younger children in toiletry and hygienic functions as required. Assist in serving lunch and snacks; in monitoring these periods; and in keeping rooms and equipment neat and orderly after snack and activity periods. Performs related duties as required.
This is a 1716 union position. The hours of work for this position are 40 per week. This is a grant -funded position renewable on an annual basis. The City of Hartford is not obligated to fund this position upon termination of funding. Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesThe examination will consist of a rating of your training and experience as contained on your application and may include a written test, an oral test, a performance test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. This examination and employment process are subject to all federal, state, and municipal laws, rules and regulations. The examination is designed to measure:
Knowledge of:
- Basic principles and methods of supervising pre-school children;
- Basic health, personal hygiene and safety precautions to be taken in dealing with children.
Ability to:
- Instruct children in games, simple crafts, and various play activities;
- Maintain order and to receive minor behavioral problems that arise in children’s activities;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, parents and other employees.
QualificationsOpen to all applicants who meet the following qualifications: A high school diploma or GED and one (1) year of work experience in child care;
ORA high school diploma or GED and the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential;
ORA high school or GED and twelve (12) credits in Early Childhood Education.
Necessary Special Qualifications:
Incumbents hired based on a high school diploma or GED and one (1) year on experience must obtain twelve (12) credits in Early Childhood Education from an accredited college or University within a maximum of one (1) year from date of appointment OR obtain and maintain a current Child Development Associate (CDA) in center-based preschool or infant/toddler settings within a maximum of one (1) year from date of appointment and maintains certification thereafter.
An employee who fails to obtain the specified credits or obtain and maintain certification as specified above shall either return to his/her former or comparable position, if available or will be administratively separated.A COPY OF YOUR DEGREE OR TRANSCRIPT MUST BE ATTACHED TO OUR APPLICATION.
