POSITION SUMMARY

Maintains surveillance and enforces beach regulations to ensure and secure the safety of beach patrons. Rescues patrons who are in distress and responds to emergency situations as they arise. Administers First Aid and CPR as needed. Must be available to work weekends and holidays.

The City offers a wide variety of benefits to their employees. The City participates in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) which will require a 3% contribution from employees. Employees will be automatically enrolled in FRS.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalencySix (6) months paid work experience performing open water lifeguard duties is preferred.Must complete a 40-hour United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) lifeguard training program with Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue, or complete 40-hour United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) certified training with a nearby lifeguard agency with comparable conditions and geographic features before being assigned to a lifeguard duty. Possess a currently valid American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS/C.P.R. card at time of appointment.Must possess an American Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder Certificate or a comparable certificate from a recognized training entity that follows national Emergency Medical Responder standardsbefore being assigned to lifeguard duty. State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is preferred.Be able to successfully pass a performance test, which includes both simulated pool and ocean rescues prior to appointment. This test must be successfully passed every six (6) months after employment.All required certifications and licenses must be kept current and valid while employed in a position in this class.Must be 18 or olderIf claiming Veteran's Preference, candidates must attach a DD214 Member 4 form, and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form (J-204) to the online application.


As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The position involves heavy physical demands, such as exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

Exposure to hazardous conditions and potential life-threatening situations when performing rescues.
