SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT, ENERGY RECOVERY SECTION, MAINTENANCE GROUP, PUENTE HILLS GAS TO ENERGY FACILITY, WHITTIERESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To perform more skilled preventive repair and maintenance of stationary equipment, machinery, and steam turbines, gas turbines, gas collection systems and water extraction systems at Solid Waste and Energy Recovery Facilities.

- Performing precision repair, major overhaul, installation and preventive/predictive maintenance on a variety of specialized mechanical machinery including turbines, boilers, stationary engines, blowers, pumps and process and instrument air compressors, complex gear boxes such as speed reducers, increasers, super-heated steam generation equipment, centrifuges with hydraulic back drive systems, stationary hydraulic systems including pumps, motor cylinders and pneumatic conveying systems, preliminary treatment systems including moving bar screens, macerators, grinders and compacting screw augers, and materials recycling systems including disc screens, trommels, conveyors, air classifiers, sorters, magnetic separators, crushers and balers
- Disassembling machinery and determining component functional capacity using visual inspection, gauges, calipers, micrometers and other precision measuring tools and testing instruments

- Inspecting machines and equipment parts to prevent breakdown or malfunction
- Collecting and evaluating diagnostic field data for predictive maintenance technologies (e.g., ultrasonic and/or vibration waveform data)
NOTE:- The incumbent is responsible for working overtime as needed and responding to emergencies, which includes being placed on a weekend emergency callout list and promptly attending to emergency callouts as required. Furthermore, this position directly involves handling the Annual Power Plant and Facility outages.
- PERG is the base location, but this position also supports the Puente Hills Landfill, Spadra Landfill, Scholl Canyon Landfill, Palos Verdes Landfill, Mission Canyon Landfill, Calabasas Landfill Gas-to-Energy Facility, Calabasas Landfill, Puente Hills Material Recovery and Intermodal Facility, Downey Area Transfer and Recycling facility, South Gate Transfer Station, Mesquite Regional Landfill and Intermodal Facility.
- A crane certification from the State of California may be required. Should it be required, crane certification involves attendance at training sessions, passing written and/or practical examinations and providing annual evidence of medical fitness.
- The selected candidate must be medically cleared to wear a respiratory protection device.
- This is a 9/80 position with alternating Fridays as the RDO (Regular Day Off).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSApplicants must possess all of the following:
- A valid California Class C driver license
- One of the following:
- Equivalent to four (4) years of directly related experience in the stationary mechanic apprenticeship program with the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, one (1) year of which must have been at the Apprentice II level
- Four (4) years of experience performing directly related skilled maintenance or craft duties involving the repair and overhaul of a variety of comparable machinery and equipment
- One of the following substitution options may be applied toward the experience requirement:
- Twelve (12) semester units of college coursework approved by the Districts or completion of one (1) year of a two-year trade school in a mechanical technology or closely related program may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience
- Graduation from a two-year trade school in a mechanical technology or closely related program may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience
EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Knowledge of: - Methods, materials and tools used in the repair of large and complex mechanical equipment such as engines, compressors and pumps and their operation
- Use of precision test equipment and tools
- Hand tools, welding and cutting equipment, pipe cutters and threaders, valve grinders and various saws
- Occupational hazards and safety regulations of the trade
Ability to: - Diagnose and repair a wide variety of mechanical equipment
- Read, interpret and work from repair manuals and specifications
- Use specialized tools and equipment
- Instruct apprentices in trade techniques

SELECTION PROCESS: - All applications will be reviewed to determine if the conditions and qualifications for testing are met.
- The selection process will consist of a written exam weighted at 50% and an interview weighted at 50%.
- Candidates must receive a qualifying score on each selection component to move forward in the selection process.
- The written exam will take place on Tuesday, March 26
- Interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of April 1.

RETIREMENT - CALPERS: The Districts belong to the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), and all monthly status new hires will be enrolled in CalPERS. Most new hires will be enrolled in the defined benefit formula of 2% @ 62 in accordance with the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) and are required to contribute to the plan (7.75% for the 24/25 fiscal year). Those who qualify based on current or previous public service may be enrolled in the defined benefit formula in place on December 31, 2012, which was 2% @ 55 and are considered “classic” members. For “classic” members, the Districts pay the “employee share.” Please contact the Human Resources Department for more information regarding contribution rates. Although Districts employees are exempt from Social Security, employees are required by federal law to contribute a percentage of their salary for Medicare coverage.
- DEFERRED COMP MATCH: For some bargaining units, the Districts provides a matching contribution to an eligible deferred compensation plan pursuant to Section 457 of the Internal Revenue Code. The match with each paycheck will be the lesser of: 3% of the employee's base monthly salary as listed in the Salary Schedule; and the amount the employee is contributing with that paycheck. The annual total combined employee and employer contribution are subject to IRS limits.
COMPENSATION Employees receive annual salary increases until reaching step 5 of the salary range and are provided with opportunities to promote. Cost of living adjustments are implemented annually in accordance with labor agreements.
HEALTH INSURANCE- MEDICAL: Districts paid. Employees may choose from several HMO and Indemnity plans. As of January 1, 2025, the Districts contribute $2,305.28 per month for medical insurance. Depending on the choice of health plan, the Districts contribution covers all or a large portion of the premium for family coverage.
- DENTAL: Districts paid. The Districts pay the full premium for employee and dependent coverage for a prepaid dental program which provides for most routine dental care through a panel of contracting dentists with no deductibles. Employees are eligible to enroll in an indemnity plan if requested within thirty days after completion of three years of employment (sooner for some bargaining units), or during subsequent open enrollment periods.
- LIFE: The Districts pay for a term life policy. Employees can buy additional types and amounts of life insurance coverage at group rates.
LEAVE TIME- VACATION: Employees receive 88 hours of paid vacation after one full year of service, increasing up to 128 hours per year after five years, 168 hours per year after 15 years and up to 208 hours after 25 years. Prior to one year of full service, employees are given partial vacation time on January 1, based on the time worked in the preceding year.
- SICK LEAVE : Eight hours of full-pay sick leave per month.
- PERSONAL LEAVE: Employees may use up to 24 hours per calendar year from current sick leave for personal reasons. Some bargaining units allow up to 40 hours per calendar year from current sick leave for personal reasons.
- PAID PARENTAL LEAVE: Employees may use up to 80 hours of paid parental leave for each birth, foster placement and/or adoption (regardless of the number of children involved) as determined by the parental leave policy.
HOLIDAYS 13 paid holidays and one-half paid holiday depending on the employee's work schedule.
TUITION REIMBURSEMENTEmployees may be eligible for tuition reimbursement for approved accredited course work.
STUDENT LOAN PAYMENT REIMBURSEMENTFor some bargaining units, the Districts will provide student loan payment reimbursements for principal or interest paid by the employee on a qualified education loan incurred by the employee for the education of the employee. The annual maximum reimbursement is $5,250 and the lifetime reimbursement limit is $21,000.
