Patrol Officer

The Dougherty County Police Department is hiring on a continuous basis for a Patrol Officer. The purpose of this position is to ensure public safety and to enforce local, state, and federal laws. Responsible for patrol, crime prevention, traffic enforcement, investigating criminal/civil complaints, responding to residential and business alarms and other areas of assignment.

This class works under close supervision according to set procedures.

Essential tasks include patrolling designated areas, enforcing traffic laws, issuing traffic citations, investigating traffic accidents, conducting motor vehicle traffic stops, redirecting and controlling traffic flow when necessary, investigating criminal/civil complaints, making arrests when necessary, completing incident/accident reports, completing daily activity sheets, operating emergency vehicles, using hand-held and vehicle radio and communication equipment, using radar equipment, escorting funeral processions, assisting citizens with animal control complaints, working rotating shifts, and performing related work as assigned.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED equivalent, at least 21 years of age, United States citizenship, certification or eligibility to become certified under the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Act within six months of employment, ability to clear background investigation, in proportion for height/weight standards, and able to pass a job valid physical endurance test.

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations. Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken. Involves routine and frequent exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, radiation, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, explosives, violence, and other extreme hazards not listed above.

Special certifications and licenses include possessing and maintaining a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history and Georgia P.O.S.T. Certification.
