Police Cadet (Civilian Position)
The Brockton Police Department Cadet Program is designed to provide a service for the City of Brockton, the Police Department and the Community that it serves. A Police Cadet is considered a future leader in the community. The purpose of the Police Cadet Program is to attract young, well-qualified men and women to participate in an organized on-the-job training program. This program includes instructions in the duties, responsibilities, methods, and techniques of the Department. This is a law enforcement apprenticeship program designed to provide persons aged 18-22 an opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of a police career. The program is designed to better qualify the members for police officer positions when they have reached the age of 21, while providing needed services for the Department.
Police cadets participate in training programs that introduce them to the fundamentals of law enforcement and prepare them to become police officers. After completing the training program, police cadets provide valuable support services to law enforcement officials and train under the guidance of sworn police officers. They may support police operations, such as traffic control, or perform administrative duties at the police station.
Salary: $19.00 per hour. Full Time/Benefited/Non-Union.
Job duties include:
- Perform various administrative tasks: filing, data entry, information research/investigation, answer phones, scanning, data collection, traffic studies, mailings, research, production, and redaction special requests.
- Participate in ride-alongs.
- Participate in special events throughout City.
- 911 Call Taker (FILL-IN ONLY)
- Handle public inquiries.
- Conduct surveys.
- Assist citizens, write non-violent no-suspect reports.
- Assist in non-front-line Police Officer Activities
- Assist with Vehicle Maintenance record keeping
- Participate in Crime Prevention activities like attending neighborhood watch meetings, business association meetings, school and community group presentations, and conducting Police Department building tours while assigned to the Community Education Division.
- Participate in departmental initiatives which foster positive interaction between the police and members of the community such as the Boys and Girls Club and Old Colony YMCA.
To be considered for a position as a cadet, a candidate:
- Must be a Brockton resident at the time of application and has resided in Brockton for one year immediately prior to the date of application; or earned a high school diploma from a public school located within the geographical confines of Brockton or so resided in Brockton when they received their high school diploma.
- Must be a Citizen or Naturalized Citizen.
- Must be between the ages of 18 to 22.
- Must be of good moral character and high integrity.
- Must have at least a High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts.
- Must be able to work nights and weekends.
- Applicants are subject to a physical fitness test.
