In addition, this individual may be assigned primary responsibility for the department's programming, marketing, interlibrary loan, special collection, makerspace, library or things, or other initiatives as they arise. The Adult Services Librarian serves as a member of the Library's professional staff, making recommendations for policies, procedures, and services, and seeking budgetary support for the department. The Adult Services Librarian is assigned a schedule including evenings and weekends as necessary for appropriate delivery of public services. The position requires the use of independent judgment, initiative, maturity, observation, and communication skills.Examples of Essential Job FunctionsProvides a full range of information services to the public, including reference, reader's/media advisory, assistance with library technology and online resources, and other public services as needed, in person, by phone, and online, while ensuring that each library user receives the highest possible standard of customer service.Develops and conducts programming for library users. Administers multiple programs per week for which objectives and general procedures have been established or outlined.Maintains a programming budget. Negotiates with presenters, writes contract, collects invoices and w9s and works with the Business Office to coordinate payment.Works with community to schedule, plan and install exhibits in display cases and galleries throughout the Library.Works in conjunction with the Children's and Young Adult department to plan and implement an annual summer reading program.Develops, weeds, and maintains print, electronic, and multimedia collections within budgetary guidelines.Fosters a love of reading through engaging displays, curated lists, and reader's advisory assistance.Advertises for programs using print and electronic means. Prepares posters and graphics using computer design programs. Assists patrons using the spaces as needed.Creates curated themed book displays and maintains end caps.Other Job FunctionsUtilizes SWPL's integrated library system software and public catalog website at a high competency.Relieves other employees as directed by supervisor, including responsibility for a unit in the temporary absence of a professional librarian.Receives and responds to general information requests by telephone or in writing.Makes minor repairs to books, documents, periodicals, and materials as needed.Checks in orders received and distributes items to relevant departments as necessary.Monitors supplies for reordering.Makes suggestions regarding the purchase of equipment, and supplies needed for the maintenance of the collection.Actively pursues professional growth opportunities, including keeping current of new library trends through readings and workshops. Maintains knowledge of library services and changes within the industry.Performs related work and assists with special projects as required.Performs basic circulation and cataloging procedures.Manages the behavior of patrons to maintain a positive, safe, and useful space for patrons.Operates and maintains library equipment; trains the public and troubleshoots as needed.Opens and closes building. Responds to emergency building issues.Creates printed graphics to post in library on doors, front entrance board and Friends Room case.Keeps aware of other related resources available in the area and utilizes opportunities for collaborations, partnerships and referrals.Position RequirementsBachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a master's degree in Library Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association.Provides a high level of customer service.Maintains a working knowledge of library principles and practices.Sustains moderate computer literacy: familiarity with Microsoft Office/Google Workspace applications, email, intermediate typing skills, able to connect to an open WiFi network, able to download apps on a smartphone.Makes decisions of other than a routine nature in order to meet controlling conditions.Deals with associates and the public in a courteous manner.Effectively communicates with a wide variety of individuals of differing ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.Maintains a neat personal appearance and pleasing manner.Applies common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or schedule form.Adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides all units of measure.Driver's license and reliable access to a vehicle.Necessary Special RequirementsNot applicable.Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
