Position Description
THE POSITION
The General Services Department Fleet Management Division is looking for an experienced mechanic to be a Light Equipment Mechanic Leadworker. This role performs advanced journey-level mechanic work and provides lead direction in the maintenance and repair of the City’s light automotive equipment including cars, pickups, and other light vehicles and equipment.
As a Light Equipment Mechanic Leadworker, you will assign and inspect the work of mechanics and other shop employees, provide technical assistance and training, and perform skilled tasks related to the repair, maintenance, and upfitting of automotive equipment, along with other duties that keep Fresno’s fleet operating safely and reliably.

The current vacancy exists in the General Services Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period for up to a maximum of two (2) years at the City’s discretion. Should the competitive process be suspended for this recruitment, the eligibility list may be limited to three (3) months.
THE REQUIREMENTS
These are entrance requirements to the competitive examination and do not assure a place on the eligible list. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline to qualify .
Education
Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent GED completion.
Experience
Three (3) years of full-time paid experience maintaining and repairing gasoline, diesel, and electric automotive equipment including cars, pickups, and other vehicles and equipment.
A certification of completion or an Associates Degree from a recognized vocational, technical school, or accredited college or university program in automotive or heavy equipment technology may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid Class “C” California Driver’s License is required at time of application and continued maintenance throughout the entire term of employment in this classification. Depending on assignment, may be required to obtain a California Commercial Class B Driver’s License with required endorsements and without air brake restriction within twelve (12) months of department request.
Possession of a valid National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Automobile and Light Truck (A) Technician certification is required at the time of application and continued maintenance throughout the entire term of employment in this classification.
Applicants MUST upload copies of ASE Certifications for verification of requisite requirement. Applicants lacking the documentation will be rejected.
Eligibles certified for consideration for this position will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint process prior to employment with the City of Fresno.
Light Equipment Mechanic Leadworker positions which require a Commercial Class B Driver’s License based on area of assignment are designated as being "safety sensitive" and require all eligibles offered employment to successfully pass a drug test prior to employment. Federal law requires that applicants for positions involving the operation of certain transit vehicles, revenue service vehicles, the transportation of hazardous materials, or heavy equipment over 26,001 pounds requiring a commercial driver’s license, must undergo pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment and may be subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout entire term of employment in this position.
SELECTION PROCESS
The examination process may consist of the following:
ORAL EXAMINATION- 100%: A panel of subject matter experts will conduct a job-related panel interview to evaluate a candidate's training, experience, and personal traits for the position. Candidates must achieve a passing score on the oral examination to qualify for the eligible list.

The Oral Examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of: September 28, 2026.
VETERAN’S PREFERENCE
Qualified veterans who pass the examination may obtain five (5) additional points.
Candidates applying for veteran's preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran's preference credit is requested.

HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENT (HRA)
Eligible retirees can use the remaining Sick Leave balance, in excess of 240 hours, at 80% of hourly rate and other qualified leave balances, tax free, to reimburse health insurance premiums and other qualified medical expenses.
RETIREMENT - City of Fresno Retirement Systems, one of the best funded public systems in the state. Reciprocity with other public California systems. Vested in Retirement benefits after 5 years of service. City employees do not participate in Social Security.
DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits include ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.
