JOB SUMMARY

The Reserve Firefighter is an "At-Will, Volunteer" employee who is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Fire Chief. The Fire Chief may cancel the appointment, with or without cause, at any time without aright of appeal.

CHARACTERISTICS
The Reserve Firefighter is responsible to protect life and property using skills obtained through experience, education and training. These skills may be used in a wide variety of tasks including, but not limited to, emergency response, public education and community involvement. Under general supervision the Reserve Firefighter will be expected to perform multiple functions using sound judgment and good decision making skills.

1. Performs a full range of fire fighting duties in the suppression of structural, wildland and other types of fires; may be required to drive apparatus; performs scheduled maintenance of stations, fire apparatus and related equipment; performs other duties as required.
2. Responds to alarms as a member of a Reserve fire apparatus crew; connects and lays fire hose lines; enters burning areas and structures with charged hose lines; operates and climbs fire ladders; participates in the rescue of persons trapped in burning buildings and autos; renders first aid; opens up structural impediments which interfere with fire fighting operations utilizing various manual and power equipment; ventilates buildings to relieve smoke, heat and gases.
3. Participates in a wide range of emergency and rescue activities, including emergency medical services, extrication, heavy rescue, hazardous materials and others; operates two-way radios as necessary.
4. Participates in regular training activities and exercises; assists in making fire inspections and fire prevention activities.
5. Assists in the investigation of fire causes and the preservation of evidence when a fire is of a suspicious origin; prepares reports and may testify in court as to the findings.
6. Responds to emergency calls as dispatched within the District.
7. Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment, rehab, extinguishment and overhaul.
8. Performs salvage operations including throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
9. Writes reports accurately and in a timely manner, documenting incident data, patient assessment and patient treatment.
10. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
11. Participates in inspections of buildings, hydrants and pre-planning target hazards.
12. Participates in building, grounds and equipment maintenance; will inspect, clean and maintain fire hoses and equipment; performs general housekeeping and ground maintenance duties in the fire station; assists in the preparation and/or presentation of fire prevention programs to the public; assists in making fire prevention inspections.
13. Presents programs to public on safety and fire prevention topics.
14. Completes District's minimum required training hours annually.
15. Maintains required certifications in fire and emergency medicine.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background check and a physical to include a drug screen.

The education or experience requirements may be modified or waived at the sole discretion of the Fire Chief. At least one of the education or experience requirements must be met; both requirements cannot be modified or waived. The Sacramento Metro Fire District Board of Directors shall be notified of any such modifications or waivers.

Age

Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

Preference will be given to candidates who live within the greater Sacramento Region at time of appointment.

Education and Experience
Education must be obtained through a post secondary institution currently accredited by any accreditation body recognized by either the Counsel for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education.

In order to remain in the Reserve Firefighter Program, individuals must successfully complete all District sponsored curriculum and pass all required courses.
Required:

1. Have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Desirable:

1. Emergency Medical Technician-Basic
2. Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic
3. Completion of a California State certified Fire Academy
4. Bilingual Ability

Knowledge of:

1. Applicable federal, state, county, and District regulations, practices, and procedures.
2. Current basic firefighting methods, principles and techniques.
3. The Incident Command System.
4. Operations and maintenance of tools equipment used at emergency scenes.
5. Types of cleaning methods for various tools and equipment, correct use of cleaning solvents, and manufacturer's or departmental guidelines for cleaning equipment and tools.
6. Infectious disease control procedures.
7. Emergency radio communication procedures.
8. Medical terminology and documentation.
9. Emergency vehicle maintenance and operation, including all applicable federal and state driving licenses.

Ability to:

1. Establish and maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with a wide variety of people that include senior management, employees, outside agencies, and the general public.
2. Learn to operate fire and other emergency apparatus and equipment effectively and safely.
3. Learn to analyze fire and other emergency situations accurately and take effective action.
4. Follow directions and orders of superiors quickly in emergency situations.
5. Understand and comply with Metro Fire's policies, rules, regulations, laws and ordinances pertaining to the position's essential functions.
