Voter Registration and Elections

12 Months, Part-Time

Non-Exempt, Pay Grade 27

The Office of Voter Registration and Elections is seeking to fill a part time, 20-hour per week vacancy as an Assistant Registrar.

Job Summary/Objective:

The Assistant Registrar supports the Registrar and Chief Deputy Registrar in the Department of Voter Registration and Elections by performing technical and clerical work related to voter registration, maintenance of voter records, and assisting with the fair, free, and efficient conduct of elections in Albemarle County. Work is performed in compliance with federal and state election laws, with a focus on accuracy, customer service, and professionalism.

  • None


Essential Functions:

  • Process voter registration applications and determines eligibility in accordance with Virginia law;
  • Maintains accurate physical and computerized voter registration and election records;
  • Provides information and customer service to the public, candidates, and elected officials in a courteous and professional manner
  • May interact with staff from other Virginia localities regarding voter records and registration issues.
  • Reviews and processes early voting applications, and issues early voting ballots in person and by mail to eligible voters;
  • Assists in all early voting and elections day preparation, including assembling materials, preparing supplies, and supporting election procedures;
  • Provides administrative and clerical support for department operations and special projects, as assigned by the Registrar or Chief Deputy Registrar;
  • Prepares and mails official notices, as directed by the Registrar or Chief Deputy Registrar;
  • Performs other duties, as assigned by the Registrar.


Competency: Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of standard office procedures, practices, and equipment.
  • Ability to learn and apply federal, state, and local voter registration and election laws.
  • Ability to work accurately with detailed information.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to handle interactions with the public and others with tact and diplomacy


Required Education and Experience:

  • One or more years of experience in office administration, customer service, or clerical work.
  • Must meet general qualifications to become a Notary Public.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license. This position is required to drive and must meet eligibility requirements of the County’s safe driver policy.


Preferred Qualifications/Certifications:

  • Experience in voter registration, elections administration, or a related government field.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, with at least two years of college preferable.


Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Must be a qualified voter in the Commonwealth of Virginia (24.2-112, Code of Virginia).
  • Assistant Registrars are appointed for a term not to exceed that of the appointing Registrar and serve at the discretion of the Registrar.
  • Assistant Registrars may not be paid or volunteer workers in the campaign of a candidate for nomination or election to an office filled by election in whole or in part by the qualified voters of his/her jurisdiction.
  • Assistant Registrars may not hold elective office and may not be the employee or deputy of an elected official.
  • Nature of contact is generally cooperative.
  • All work must be completed in a non-partisan fashion, incumbent must be able to tactfully handle partisan political statements made by officials, candidates, or the general public.
  • Work is generally performed in an office setting, with infrequent travel to other sites.
  • Requires frequent sitting or standing for extended periods with occasional moderate lifting.
  • Requires operation of a variety of standard office machines.
  • Frequent contact made with County staff, general public, candidates and elected officials.
  • Some evening and weekend work required. Overtime is required as workload dictates.


Salary Range:

The hiring range for this position is $22.49 - $24.86 per hour (approx. $23,397.00 - $25,860.00 per year). Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requires and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options, with employer contribution, employer paid life insurance, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a part time, FLSA non-exempt position.
