DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe, well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking an Equipment Worker (Medium) to join its Facilities Management and Development team.
This person will operate a variety of equipment such as dump trucks, Backhoes, Box Blades, Small Graders, Bobcats, Sweepers, and rubber-tire loaders. Perform construction projects. Transport refuse and materials utilizing a 12-yard dump truck. Clean and service equipment. Perform a variety of manual activities such as asphalt and concrete placement, mowing, etc. Assist in preparing reports and record keeping. Maintain a safe and clean work site. Repair and maintain facilities, structures, and equipment. Perform other duties as assigned.
This position is designated among essential personnel under the City of Houston's Emergency Management Policy.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position requires stooping, bending and/or lifting of items of up to 30 pounds with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six (6) months of experience in the operation of plant or automotive equipment and attachments are required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Must have a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving based on the type of equipment the individual is assigned to operate (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCES
Applicants with the following attributes are highly preferred:
- Applicants who can work Day, Evening, Night, Weekend, and Holiday shifts are highly preferred.
- Applicants with experience using the following equipment are highly preferred:
- Backhoe, 12-yard tractor, box blade, 12-yard dump truck, asphalt roller, small grader, small rubber tire loader.
