Job Summary: Contributes to the overall mission and values of the City of Loveland byadhering to City of Loveland (COL) core values and safety standards in theperformance of basic and advance repairs, diagnostics, and preventive maintenance services such as inspecting, lubricating and servicing primarily light duty vehicles, with growth opportunities in medium and heavy vehicles. By building upon experience and formal training in automotive and/or diesel mechanics, the Tech I will steadily grow their skills to eventually maintain and repair up to 28 classes of vehicles comprising the municipal fleet. Fleet Technician I level may expect to progress to the II level once the full range of required skills, duties and training have been mastered.
The salary range for this position is
$27.88- $39.04 per hour with a hiring range of
$27.88 - $33.46, depending on qualifications and experience.

Essential Functions: - Performs minor and major Preventive Maintenance services and repairs.
- Performs component diagnostics, removals and re-installations; parts replacements; parts cleaning; and assists with jobs requiring an additional technician as well as heavy jobs.
- Works as an effective member of the Fleet Services team by responding to change with a positive attitude, meeting customer needs with flexibility, and by asking questions proactively when faced with uncertainty.
- Maintains constructive dialogue and relationships with the public and City staff through effective interpersonal communications and customer service skills.
- Gains additional fleet operations knowledge and skill through shadowing and taking direction from journey-level technicians while assisting on fleet maintenance and repairs.
- Ensures all required information is reported accurately on work orders, preventative maintenance reports, and other documents.
- Performs work in accordance with industry and City safety standards.
Other Job Functions: - Cleans tools and maintains shop.
- Attends training to upgrade technical skills.
- Performs State of Colorado emission and DOT inspections.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Education: - Automotive or diesel vocational or technical school degree or certificate, or three (3) year's experience in the automotive repair industry required. An equivalent combination of education and or experience may substitute for education requirements on a year for year basis.
Certifications: - Must possess a CDL Instructors Permit within 6 weeks of hire and a Class A or B CDL license with passenger (P) endorsement within six (6) months of hire.
- Requires State of Colorado gas emissions licenses within 120 days of hire.
- ASE Master Certification in Automotive/Light truck (A1-A8) highly desired.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Ability to read and understand equipment maintenance and repair manuals, follow written and verbal instructions, and communicate directly and effectively with a variety of people including vendors, equipment operators, and co-workers.
- Expected to learn mostly via on-the-job training.
- Expected to continue automotive and/or diesel technical education throughout their career. Pursuance of some training on personal time will be necessary.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: - Frequent s trenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.
- Frequent e xposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.
- Occasional e xposure to hazards that are predictable or well protected against.
Additional Working Demands / Conditions: - Expected to own and work with a complete set of mechanical hand tools appropriate for a professional fleet technician. An annual tool allowance is provided to cover non-warrantable tool breakage, wear and loss.
- Work hours vary by season and are subject to change based on emergency or weather-related events, which may extend the workday to include occasional night-shift work.
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions may be required on an as-needed bases.
- Spends a majority of the time either walking or standing while in the shop or field.
- Physical demands moderate to heavy physical work requiring lifting, carry, push and pull up to 100 lbs. while performing mechanical functions in the shop and field. Lifting of heavy and awkward objects, up to 100 lbs. from ground level to waist level or higher, either on solid ground, or while balancing. Occasional positioning and re-adjusting objects of 200 lbs.
- Work involves regular walking, standing, and frequent full range of body movement including bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing and crawling.
- Considerable hand/eye/foot coordination is necessary to operate tools and equipment, and occasionally operate equipment and vehicles. Correctible vision is required to read automotive manuals, gauges and meters. Speech and hearing must be adequate to receive or give technical information and instructions, and to perform in a safe manner.
This position is considered essential personnel required to report for duty in response to community emergencies (e.g. natural disaster, fire, flood, blizzard, etc.). The position requires a CDL. Employees in this position are subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing.
