The Team... Port Planning is a division of the Bureau of Planning and Environmental Affairs. The Port Planning Division is organized around three functional groups: Strategic Plan & Land Use Group, Economics & Funding Group, and Transportation Development Group.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The Role... Under the direction of the Director of Port Planning and Port Planning Division staff, the Port Planning intern performs tasks related to planning and development for the Port.
How you will contribute as a Port Planning Intern: - Support short- and long-range planning efforts that inform future land use development and infrastructure improvements at the Port.
- Review and analyze transportation and goods movement issues.
- Assemble, organize, evaluate, and present data for use in Port economic, land use and transportation studies, regional transportation studies, and/or grant applications.
- Analyze regional, state and national transportation policies and programs and assess their impact or benefit to the Port and its stakeholders.
- Assist in research and review of transportation policy.
- Assist in the preparation, review, and update of planning documents and programs.
- Support managing the Port’s Port Master Plan and Port’s Risk Management Plan (RMP) in accordance with the California Coastal Act (CCA).
- Assist in the review, analysis, and preparation of land use studies for Port facilities.
- Conduct or assist in the analysis of regulatory, legislative, and permitting issues.
- Assist with Geographic Information System (GIS) data collection, organization, and mapping.
- Assist in gathering, analyzing, and presenting input/output from the Land Use Model (LUM), which includes the Integrated Land Use Tool (ILUT) and the Port Terminal Capacity Model (PTCM).
- Assist in collecting information on terminal throughput, berth, and land utilization in the Port.
- Assist in the preparation of market, planning, and logistics studies, including research, technical analyses, and documentation preparation.
- Assist with Request for Proposals, task authorizations, and related project documents.
- Assist in coordination with Port consultants and outside agency representatives.
- Prepare reports and correspondence.
- Perform other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE Required Experience and Qualifications: - Current student enrolled in an accredited college or university with 60 completed units or more, or completion of a Bachelor’s degree in the last 12 months.
- A major in Urban and Regional Planning/Policy or a closely-related field is preferred.
- Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and areas of technical expertise is required.
- Familiarity with planning principles and methodologies is helpful.
- Understanding of basic project management and effective organizational skills is helpful.
- Experience with data collection, reviewing, and preparing documents/spreadsheets is desirable.
- Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is desirable.
- Experience working for or with regulatory agencies, planning/environmental organizations, or industry is desirable.
Technical Skills Needed: - Effective use of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
- Must be able to adapt and use new software programs, as applicable.
- Must be able to review and interpret regulatory language and determine how the requirements apply to port facilities and operations.
- Require the ability to gather information, identify research resources, and find solutions.
- Must be able to compose and edit correspondence.
- Must have excellent proofreading and editing skills and be detail-oriented.
Interpersonal Skills: - Require strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as the ability to work independently.
- Must be able to clearly coordinate with supervisors and co-workers.
- Require a collaborative work style, fostering cooperation and teamwork.
- Must be able to maintain an even temperament and have a willingness to change priorities and be flexible as circumstances dictate.

The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the Port of Long Beach and can be terminated at any time. The non-career Intern position typically works 20 hours per week, and cannot exceed an average of 29 hours per week throughout the year, up to a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. Flexibility is offered within typical business hours. The assignment may end at any time, but under no circumstances will it extend beyond two years.
