Purpose:

Under close supervision, performs general street, bridge, and right of way maintenance, construction and rehabilitation for a large public works department. Incorporating standard maintenance, construction and repair techniques to produce a finished product to required standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum of 18 years old.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

Valid Class "C" Driver's License. • If required, must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of employment with the City.

Physical Requirements:

Continuous outdoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, inclement weather, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor/dust hazards, electrical hazards, occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying/lifting up to a minimum of 50lbs., client/ customer contact, and indoor activity.

The Street & Bridge Operations Technician Trainee positions work in the Transportation Public Works Department. These positions will be part of a nine-month program with a career progression focus on excelling in construction for the City of Austin. You will be training with mentors who are subject matter experts who will guide you through the program.

You will gain exposure and be cross trained in three divisions (Utilities and structures, District Maintenance, and Pavement and infrastructure) within Street and Bridge Operations.

PLEASE NOTE: Austin Transportation and Public Works positions are not at 100% remote operation.

Travel:

If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

Essential Employee:

This position is considered an “Essential” role and is essential to the operations of the City based on the preparation, response, and recovery phase of extraordinary situations or emergency conditions. As an employee that has been designated as “Essential” the expectation will be to work at a designated work site during declared extraordinary situations or emergency conditions to serve the community.

This position is considered “Essential” to maintain critical operations and core services. Essential Employees during emergencies play a role in ensuring the public health, safety, and welfare of our community and ensuring City operations continue.

Work Schedule:

We have three different shifts.

Monday - Friday 6:00 - 2:30

Monday - Thursday 6:00 - 4:30

Friday - Monday 8:00 am - 6:30 pm.

*Hours may vary depending on work demands and business needs.

Salary Range:

$22.05 per hour
