The LA County Board of Supervisors has unanimously ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the windstorms and wildfires , including the Palisades and Eaton Fires, that have devastated communities across the County. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to assist the County in mobilizing resources and support needed to help our residents recover and rebuild. The Office of the Assessor is seeking qualified candidates to fill an emergency Safety Officer I vacancy related to this unprecedented natural disaster.
Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.

Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Safety Officer I.


ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Safety Officer I position is responsible for independently developing and implementing the safety and accident prevention program for the department. Incumbents also develop and implement safety policies and procedures, safety plans, safety audits/inspections, training programs and the elimination of workplace hazards to ensure compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act as well as other federal, state and local safety codes and regulations.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Option 1: One year's experience as head of a comprehensive safety and accident prevention program*.
Option 2: Four years technical experience in safety inspection**, safety promotion***, or safety training****. A Bachelor of Science degree in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene or a related field may be substituted for two years of technical experience*****.

You MUST meet one of the above requirements in order to be appointed to fil any vacancies related to this recruitment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION :
*Experience in comprehensive safety and accident prevention programs includes administering workplace health and safety initiatives in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, industry standards, and internal policies. This involves advising management and collaborating with operations to evaluate environmental, health, and safety risks, as well as developing and implementing action plans to mitigate hazards and prevent workplace incidents.

**Technical experience in safety inspection includes systematically evaluating workplaces to identify hazards and assess risks that could lead to injury or illness. This involves analyzing drawings and floor plans, reviewing machinery, equipment, and hazardous materials inventories, and applying knowledge of departmental Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), prior inspections, and incident investigation reports. Responsibilities also include preparing comprehensive reports, communicating findings to stakeholders, and tracking the implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions.

***Technical experience in safety promotion involves creating awareness, engagement, and safe behaviors through training, communication, and initiatives that support a strong workplace safety culture and prevent incidents.

****Technical experience in safety training involves educating employees on hazards, safe work practices, and compliance requirements to reduce risk and prevent workplace incidents.

LICENSE:

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS 2 - LIGHT:

This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

OUR ASSESSMENT PROCESS: During your initial work period, the appointing department will evaluate your performance. Those who achieve a passing score on this evaluation will be considered for permanent appointment. If permanently appointed to the position, you will be subject to a probationary period based on the classification.
